MQM USA Sets a History….Masrur J Khan
has won Houston City Councilman seat.
MQM USA Congratulates MQM Houston Unit & the Community for their historical
efforts.(Dec-10-03)
Masrur Javed "M.J." Khan, 53, supported by MQM United States had been
campaigning in houston’s Distric F, with Terry McConn, 45, a son of the late Jim
McConn, who was mayor from 1978 until 1982. Mr. Khan led the field Nov. 4,
winning 37.5 percent of the vote to Mr. McConn's 36.5 but faced a Run-Off. He
wins again with over 7000 votes in the latest and final polls.
MQM USA has supported me from across the spectrum," said Mr. Khan wh was talking
to Channel 24 TV and a main-stream radio in Houston last night. Masrur has
focused his campaign on improving services such as flood control, traffic
improvement, and police and fire protection. This is the latest version of a
familiar story: Immigrants finding their place in America, making it their home,
building businesses, becoming involved in civic life. It's happened in Houston
with Hispanics, Chinese, Koreans and Vietnamese. Now, it's happening with South
Asians, people from Pakistan and India, who were the fastest growing subgroup in
Houston's population between 1990 and 2000, according to Rice University they're
estimated to number about 40,000. And without any doubts, MQM is the major force
behind almost every success of Pakistanis in this city.
M J Khan requested MQM USA’s Central Organizer for endorsing him for the Houston
Councilman seat while the Central Organizer was addressing a public meeting in
Houston last June. After a detailed consultation with the International
Secretariat in London and the Central Organizing Committee in the United States,
MQM USA announced its support for Khan and all the workers were instructed to
fully participate in Khan’s election campaign. Khan has been a supporter of MQM
for the last several years and was seen in almost all MQM gatherings in Houston.
MQM USA’s central Organizer is visiting Houston next week to attend Masrur’s
victory celebrations whereas Dr.Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, the caretaker of MQM
North American Chpter will be attending Khan’s oath taking ceremony on January
2, 2004 at Houston City Hall.
