Mr. Syed Haider Abbas Rizvi addresses in Chicago on Provincial Autonomy

Communication & Media Cell, MQM USA; Chicago; July 17th, 2009: MQM Deputy Parliamentary leader and member of National Assembly of Pakistan Syed Haider Abbas Rizvi addressed a huge gathering at the Indo-American Center in Chicago that was organized by the local MQM USA chapter. The agenda of the event was Provincial Autonomy and its impact on present day Pakistan.

The event started by recitation from the Holy Quran followed by brief yet emotional poetic verses by Mr. Shahid Alig and Mr. Qaisar Naqvi depicting the sacrifices made by MQ M workers. This was followed by book presentations to Mr. Rizvi Haider outlining the work of Ms. Zara Hyderabadi, Mr. Wajid Nadeem, Mr. Rasheed Sheikh and Mr. Ehtesham Uddin Arshad. Senior Coordinator, MQM International Division, Mr. Muhammad Younus, and office bearers of MQM Chicago and MQM USA also addressed the crowd and thanked the local chapter for organizing the event.

While addressing the gathering, Syed Haider Abbas Rizvi asserted that the population of Pakistan consists of people with diverse cultures, languages and historical backgrounds; and that the existence of Pakistan came into being on the basis of an agreement that each of the federating units would benefit from the status of a sovereign one. He backed his claim with historical evidence and stated that the 1940 Resolution or its Amended Objective Resolution of 1946 without any doubt defined Pakistan as A Federation comprising of autonomous units which shall be completely sovereign. However, the successive rulers have made new constitutions based on their own interests and hence deprived the federating units of all their legal rights. In particular, he shed light on the treatment of the people of Baluchistan province, Urdu speaking community of Karachi and the Bengali diaspora of former East Pakistan. He ended his speech by reemphasizing on provincial autonomy which he felt as a vital step that would rescue Pakistan from troubled times which lie ahead and restated that it will make governing of the state more robust.

The program was followed with the presentation of floral bouquet to Mr. Rizvi by the members of the organizing committee of the local chapter and concluded with dinner.
